Welcome back to campus and Happy New Year. The new year brings news from our governor that our state revenue fell short of projections, triggering mid-year budget cuts. Unfortunately, the University of California will face another $100 million reduction. UC has already taken a $650 million hit this fiscal year and we’re requesting that this latest “trigger cut” be considered a one-time cut to our budget, and not a permanent one. UC President Mark Yudof has said that the University will employ temporary bridging strategies to cover the cut for this fiscal year.

Chancellor Fox joined dozens of UC San Diego students, staff, faculty and alumni for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Volunteer50 project at the American Legion Hall in National City on Jan. 15. Volunteers helped to restore parts of the building, and many marched in the 32nd annual MLK Day Parade later in the afternoon.
