November 2004
I’d like to bring you up to date on some of this Fall quarter’s activities, including efforts to strengthen campus operations and outreach to alumni and community partners. It has been a very busy and productive stretch, and as I grow more familiar with this institution, I am pleased to see how much people genuinely care about this campus, its traditions, and its future prospects. Community Outreach On October 20, I hosted a reception for Chicano and Latino community leaders, the first in a series of get-acquainted meetings with key constituent groups. Despite inclement weather, more than 100 community members attended, and I came away with many new friendships and an appreciation of UCSD’s importance in the greater San Diego community. In the weeks to come, I will host similar receptions for other community leaders before beginning a series of off-campus visits this winter and spring. Educational Outreach Funding As UCSD deals with ongoing statewide and UC-wide budget challenges, we are pleased to announce that we have reached a workable solution on the very important issue of outreach funding, and that solution has been approved by the Office of the President (OP). Reductions to UC outreach programs over the past two years have reached 50 percent, and all UC campuses have been forced to make tough decisions. We have developed an approach that maintains the integrity and effectiveness of the programs, in a fiscally responsible way, within the current statewide budget limitations, and OP supports our plans. Outreach will continue to be a top priority for this campus and this university. I want to express special appreciation to our campus units who have worked so diligently to craft this solution, and to OP for its support for our outreach programs. Campus Co-ops I have listened with great interest to the views of the campus community about the importance of the Co-ops. In the weeks since my arrival, I have made it a priority to see things for myself and have visited one of the Co-Ops and the Che Café. In the messages they have sent me, students, faculty, staff and alumni note with pride the long tradition of these student-run businesses on our campus. I share their enthusiasm to ensure the continuation of the Co-ops as learning opportunities for students and as resources for everyone in the community. Negotiations to reach an agreement are continuing, and I am confident that we can follow established procedures to arrive at an agreement that ensures the safe, ongoing operation of the Co-ops. I will continue to monitor progress as negotiations proceed and, I appreciate your comments about the importance of the Co-ops. Alumni and Service Awards This month, we had two premier opportunities to recognize the dedication of our staff and the achievements of our alumni. I am pleased to note these two benchmarks of UCSD’s excellence: the Alumni Association’s 2004 Awards for Excellence gala on October 23 (link) and the 2005 Employee Service Awards ceremony on October 27 (link). I encourage you to visit these Webpages to read about your colleagues and UCSD alumni who have rendered distinguished service to our University. Proposition 71 As this Website News Update goes to press, election results show that California voters have passed Proposition 71, the ballot initiative aimed at providing $3 billion in state funding for stem cell research. This measure will establish a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to award grants and loans for stem cell research and research facilities. It is too early to tell exactly how the University of California will participate in this new Institute, but it is safe to say that this new investment will advance stem cell research at UCSD and other UC campuses. For more about how stem cell research is conducted, you can read the Q&A with Larry Goldstein in this News Update issue. Letters to the Chancellor/Chancellor’s Walk-In Hours With this month’s posting on the Chancellor’s Webpage, I’ll begin to publish a sampling of “Letters to the Chancellor” along with responses that will address issues of broad interest to the campus community. In your emails and letters to me, many of you have expressed a desire to know my thoughts on various campus concerns, and I welcome this opportunity to share my views. Along the same lines, I have instituted a new program of “Chancellor’s Walk-In Hours,” modeled after a program I used at North Carolina State University to engage more directly with the campus community. I have designated specific walk-in appointments for students, for faculty, and for staff. To review the schedule, please visit my Website homepage. Chancellor’s Challenge 5K The UCSD community once again was up to the challenge! The October 22 Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Race/Walk for Scholars brought in a total of $250,000 for student scholarships, the most ever raised for the event. I had a great time at RIMAC meeting the race participants, including the children and pets who joined in the race, and cheering all runners and walkers as they crossed the finish line. For images from the 5K race and festivities, please visit my photo gallery. I want to thank UC President and Chancellor’s Challenge founder Bob Dynes for joining us for this UCSD tradition. And, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped to make the Chancellor’s Challenge a rousing success. Next year, we’ll celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K. I hope I’ll see you at this most important campus community event. Thank you for visiting my Website, and please take a moment to send me your thoughts about our campus via my chancellor@ucsd.edu email address. With warm regards, Marye Anne Fox |
