LETTERS TO THE CHANCELLOR-DESIGNATE

Dear Colleagues:

In my first Website News Update as Chancellor, I would like to share with you congratulatory letters I have received since April from friends and associates across the nation and here in San Diego. After hearing the high esteem that so many people have for UCSD and for the people who study and work here, I feel greatly honored to be your Chancellor, and I am very excited about our future prospects.

This “Letters to the Chancellor” page will continue to be a forum for members of the UCSD community to express their own ideas and concerns about campus life. The opinions expressed on this Webpage are those of the writers and do not represent the views of the Chancellor or the University. I hope you will write to me via chancellor@ucsd.edu, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Marye Anne Fox
Chancellor

Dear Marye Anne:

Congratulations on having been selected to receive the 2005 Lathrop Parsons Award. This is an Award you certainly deserve for having done outstanding research in chemistry, and recently for having made students and laymen grasp the importance of science.

Years ago, when I think about it, Paul Rillema, one of my postdoctorates, was chairman of the chemistry department at North Carolina State University, and he had me come spend a few days in the department as one of its evaluators. Now my former colleague Bill Trogler, chemistry professor at the University of California, San Diego, tells me they are very happily awaiting your arrival to be their University Chancellor.

No reason why you should know me, but we did talk briefly at some of the NAS annual meetings.

Kind personal regards and best wishes,

Sincerely,

Fred Basolo
Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Emeritus Professor of Chemistry
Northwestern University

Dear Dr. Fox:

As an active member of the San Diego community, I am certainly looking forward to your arrival. Your appointment as the new Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego is very exciting for the University as well as those of us who take great pride in the overall quality of life and health of this region.

Bob Dynes, your predecessor, built strong relationships between the talents of UCSD and the greater San Diego business community. Based upon your background and accomplishments, I am confident you will continue this valuable partnership between UCSD and the surrounding business community.

Best Wishes,

Malin Burnham

Dear Marye Anne:

Having just returned from China, I am tardy in conveying my delight and congratulations on your having been selected as the next Chancellor of UCSD.

I look forward to working with you in your new capacity.

With warm regards,

Sincerely,

Albert Carnesale
Chancellor, UCLA

Dear Marye Anne:

A voice from a fellow National Science Board Member Emeritus.

I read of your appointment to Chancellor of UCSD, but wanted to wait until the expected wave of congratulations somewhat subsided. It was delightful news. UCSD is a wonderful University, and you will be a great Chancellor there.

I have thought of you, and other NSB members, often, and especially remember your taking over the Vice Chair after my time in it. I look back on my 12 years on that Board as a life highlight – serious Members, important questions, great staff. Some problems, but surmountable. Good policy decisions, by and large.

We were at Chapel Hill for our grandson’s graduation in 2002. Our daughter and her family live in North Carolina – her twin daughters are also at Chapel Hill. While there, Anne and I visited briefly with Molly Broad, who graciously saw us at her home for an hour on graduation day. I knew her well from her stint with the California State University. She seemed about the same, at least as I had interacted with her there.

Again – welcome to San Diego. If there is anything I can do to help you, do not hesitate to call.

With very best wishes,

Sincerely,

Thomas B. Day
President Emeritus
San Diego State University

P.S. I think it is especially nice of you to bring Philip Rivers with you to join our San Diego Chargers. Be sure to tell the Downtown Rotary (of which I am a member – senior!) that you did that intentionally.

Dear Dr. Fox:

Thank you so much for taking the time to appear on “North Carolina People” recently. I know our viewers appreciated this last opportunity to hear from you before you headed to California.

You accomplished great things during your tenure at NCSU, and these invaluable contributions will continue to benefit the university and the state of North Carolina for years to come.

I wish you continued success and happiness in all that you do in the future. I am certain your talents and vision will enrich all who are associated with the University of California, San Diego, just as they have done for those here in North Carolina.

Regards,

Tom Howe
Director and General Manager
North Carolina Center for Public Television

Dear Chancellor Fox:

With hope that you will enjoy these compelling stories about the remarkable advance of marine research over the latter half of the twentieth century, some of the outstanding scientists who made it possible, and the manifold role of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in oceanography’s coming of age.

We live in a time of rich opportunity for research in ocean science. May these stories help deepen our understanding of the past and sharpen our vision for the future as we move into areas yet unimagined.

With warm regards,

Charlie Kennel
Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Dear Marye Anne:

I was delighted to learn that you had been appointed Chancellor of UC San Diego, and write to offer my warm congratulations.

Your remarkable accomplishments at North Carolina State augur well for an exceptional tenure at UCSD; I am sure you will bring a new spirit of aspiration to an already great institution.

I wish you great happiness and fulfillment as you take up your new position. May you have a long and distinguished tenure.

Sincerely,

Shirley Strum Kenny
President
State University of New York, Stony Brook

Dear Dr. Fox:

On behalf of the entire University of San Diego community, I congratulate you on your appointment and welcome you to beautiful San Diego.

Your appointment as the next chancellor of UCSD, one of our nation’s most highly regarded public institutions, is a tremendous accomplishment and a true testament to your diligent scholarly work and outstanding leadership in academia.

In the year since my July 2003 appointment as the president of the University of San Diego, your predecessor and I had few opportunities to meet or work together. However, Bob and I had certainly begun to establish a good rapport and were developing plans to meet regularly when he accepted the position of president of the University of California. I hope that you and I, along with our colleagues at the other local institutions, will make the time available to continue this important dialogue and make collaborations between our offices and our universities a top priority.

Again, welcome to San Diego and my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment. From all that I have read and heard, under your leadership, UCSD’s future will continue to be very exciting.

Sincerely,

Mary E. Lyons
President
University of San Diego

Dear Chancellor-Designate Fox:

On behalf of the teachers and staff at the Early Childhood Education Center, I would like to congratulate you on your new appointment, and invite you to visit us when appropriate.

We have 204 children in our care, and 38 staff members. Our center is situated in the Mesa Graduate Student Housing complex east of campus and is a wonderful place where each day is a new adventure. We have a diverse and talented community, and support student, faculty and staff families by providing quality care and early education for their children.

Our Kindergarten group often visits campus for events and extracurricular learning opportunities, and has prepared a book for your arrival.

We hope that you enjoy their welcome book, and look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Owen

Dear Dr. Fox:

Congratulations on your appointment as the new chancellor at UCSD. I have heard many wonderful things about you from our colleagues at UCSD, and I look forward to meeting you when you arrive permanently in San Diego.

UCSD and the California Western School of Law have an Association Agreement and undertake together a number of academic programs. We look forward to continuing our productive association. Please call on me or any of us in the law school at any time if we may be of assistance as you begin your service in San Diego.

Best wishes.

Sincerely,

Steven R. Smith
Dean
California Western School of Law

Dear Marye Anne:

I just wanted to introduce myself and to say how thrilled I am to learn that you will be our new Chancellor. Not only do I welcome the opportunity to help introduce you to this diverse and exciting campus, but I shall also be able to welcome you and your husband as members of my department. It will be a special privilege and honor.

I have spent my entire academic career at UCSD, coming first in 1971 after carrying out postdoctoral work in Cambridge, England. My husband, Palmer, joined the new Pharmacology Department here in the School of Medicine, and after an additional year of postdoctoral work, I joined the Department of Chemistry, subsequently renamed Chemistry and Biochemistry. So we, my husband and I, are almost pioneers! I have always found UCSD to be a place where I could continue to learn and grow in new directions and where one could forge new boundaries across diverse disciplines. Building a diverse and interdisciplinary environment that extends from theory to chemistry and biology to biomedical science has always been one of my goals, both on campus and nationally, and I sincerely believe that there is no place that has better interdisciplinary networking at the grassroots level than UCSD. We are young as a campus, but we seem to thrive on new challenges.

I am sure that you have read the book, “An Improbable Venture,” describing the brief history of UCSD. In case you have not, I am enclosing a copy. It is a wonderful story of how we began, and we are all now laying the foundations for the next volume. Hopefully, we can continue the tradition. We are all just delighted that you will be leading us.

I also think that you and I may have some early common roots in Ohio. I moved from Wisconsin to Cleveland when I was 11 and thus have strong ties to Cleveland. My parents lived there until about six years ago.

I look forward to meeting you.

With warm regards,

Susan Taylor
Professor
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Pharmacy

Dear Chancellor Fox:

Our heartfelt congratulations on your appointment as UCSD Chancellor. From everything we hear, we are fortunate to have you. It was a pleasure meeting you and Dr. Whitesell briefly at Monday’s reception. I very much look forward to, along with Vice Chancellor Langley, briefing you on the status and goals of UCSD’s alumni relations. Better yet, our alumni are quite anxious to get to know you and welcome you to our community. All the best to you during your transitions in Raleigh and La Jolla. See you soon.

Best regards,

John Valva
Executive Director, UCSD Alumni Association

Sincerely,

Stephen L. Weber
