Letters to the Chancellor

Dear Colleagues:

These excerpts from some "Letters to the Chancellor" sent to my Web site will give you a flavor of the feedback I receive from people at UCSD and out in the community. I thank everyone who has written. I learn from each letter, and I'm glad to share these ideas and my own responses with all of you.

With warm regards,

Marye Anne Fox

Dear Chancellor Fox,

I am organizing seminars in my department at the moment. It turns out that the rates at the Estancia for the dates of one of our speakers are $289/night, compared to $129-$179 for other hotels close to UCSD. What is the point of having a hotel on University land if the rates for UCSD business can be double those of others? Is this really the best use of University land?

I would have sent this e-mail to the relevant vice-chancellor if I had any idea who that was.

Yours sincerely,
Stefan LLEWELLYN SMITH (MAE)

Chancellor Fox:
Dear Stefan,

The Estancia La Jolla Hotel was developed on UCSD land for two purposes: to provide the university with income from a groundlease on the property, and to provide another hotel and conference facility that could be rented for university purposes. The Estancia La Jolla does offer preferential rates for UCSD, however, as is customary in the industry, these rates can be confirmed only on an availability basis.

Dear Chancellor Fox,

I am an undergraduate student expected to graduate by the end of 2006. Rating my overall experience at UCSD since matriculation till now (academic and personal), I want to tell you that UC San Diego is the best university I can ever go to in my life. I believe that I have made one of the best choices applying for and going to UC San Diego. To be honest, I never regret my decision. Even if I could have gone instead to other elite public universities back then, like UC Berkeley, Wisconsin or UCLA, (for which I did not apply—UCSD was the only university I applied for admission, mainly due to the fact that at the time of application I lived in San Diego with my parents and didn't want to go out of town at all), I believe that I would still have chosen UCSD because of its academic excellence, its prestigious faculty, and its affiliation and proximity to SIO (which is the #1 top oceanography research station in the US and around the world), the Salk Institute and TSRI, both of which are world-renowned life science research institutes. And UCSD is a pretty young university compared to the Ivy Leagues and other public universities like UC Berkeley, UCLA (founded in 1919) and UCSF (founded in 1873) — it is founded only 45 years ago in 1959/1960. Taking the brevity of its history into context its achievements are more dazzling, especially in science and engineering. As a current student and future graduate of UC San Diego, I want to express my gratitude to you Dear Chancellor, for your leadership and dedication to making and leading this campus to even greater excellence in both the short and long run. Good luck to you and UCSD in the near future!

Anonymous Student/would-be graduate at UCSD

Chancellor Fox:
Dear Would-be Graduate,

What a thoughtful letter! I am grateful to you for taking the time to write such kind words. You are correct in noting that UCSD is a top-ranked university; for example, Newsweek named UCSD the “hottest” institution in the nation for students to study science. But beyond the rankings, we have a campus of fellowship and scholarship, and I believe that this is due in large part to exuberant, engaging students, such as you, that keep the University a stimulating atmosphere of growth and adventure. I would like to personally wish you a spectacular final year at UCSD, and thank you again for your heartfelt letter.

Dear Chancellor Fox:

In light of your environment and sustainability Campus group you created, and in light of UCSD getting about the lowest grade in S.D. County for controlling cigarette smoke on Campus, and in light of the recent ruling by the Calif. State Air Resources Board that second-hand smoke is toxic, what will finally be done to protect us non-smokers who wish to eat at the Price Center and elsewhere on Campus without having to breath the fouled air? And will it take a lawsuit by employees to get these non-smoking areas designated and enforced?

Chancellor Fox:

Thank you for your e-mail. UCSD supports a non-smoking environment. No smoking is permitted in any indoor area, or within 20 feet of the main entrance or exit to any facility owned or leased by UCSD. The Price Center prohibits smoking in its outdoor dining spaces and has posted signs to indicate that smoking is not allowed. If a patron of the Price Center and Student Center encounters people smoking in the outdoor spaces at these facilities, they should contact Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Life Gary Ratcliff at 858-534-0818 and identify the specific area where they witnessed people smoking.
