Pao C. Chao Pao C. Chau, Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Pao C. Chau received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1980. Chau has contributed to numerous publications and is widely known for his dedications to students. In 2001, he received the Jacobs School Teacher of the Year for Chemical Engineering. Professor Chau is a chemical engineer who is interested in biotechnology and cellular engineering. He works on large-scale mammalian cell cultures, membrane bioreactors, and cell cycle kinetics. More…

Sadik Esener Sadik C. Esener, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Professor Sadik Esener is an internationally known expert in photonics and opto-electronics, and he has been closely involved with five startup companies based on technology developed in his laboratories. His research interests include light modulation, detection, and amplification, heterogeneous integration of optoelectronic components, optical data storage, optical interconnects and related computing architectures, and biophotonics as applied to gene chips. Michael Heller Michael Heller, Professor,
Electrical & Computer Engineering, Bioengineering

Michael Heller joined the Jacobs School in 2001. Previously, he was the co-founder and chief technology officer of Nanogen, Inc., (NGEN), located in San Diego, and the principal inventor of Nanogen's microelectronic-based DNA chip technology. He presently serves as a consultant to Nanogen. Previously, he was the President and Chief Operating Officer at Integrated DNA Technologies, Director of Molecular Biology at Molecular Biosystems, and supervised the DNA Technology Group at Amoco Corporation. Heller received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Colorado State University in 1973. More…

Richard Herz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  His research interests include Catalysis under Dynamic Conditions, Adsorption Equilibria and Kinetics, Reaction-Diffusion in Porous Materials, and Interactive Software. More…

Jan Talbot Jan B. Talbot, Professor, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science
Professor Talbot's research areas include electrophoretic deposition of phosphors in the processing of advanced materials, and chemical mechanical polishing. Talbot is particularly interested in materials and the deposition of phosphors for display applications such as flat-panel displays for computers and televisions. She also studies deposition of composite films. As director of the School's Chemical Engineering Program, Talbot coordinates with affiliated faculty from the mechanical and aerospace engineering, bioengineering, and chemistry departments. More…

Kenneth Vecchio Kenneth Vecchio, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering; Director, Electron Optics and Microanalysis Facility
His current research topics include processing and performance of intermetallic-metal laminate composites for light-weight armor, characterizing and modeling strain localization in metal alloys, development of new oxidation resistant Fe-Ni-Cr alloys for high temperature applications and shock-loading effects in metals.
